Kentucky Derby Cocktail: bourbon sour with homemade sour mix

We've been enjoying this cocktail for a couple of months now.
It's all the husband's doing.
I had no idea a homemade sour mix could be so easy and make such a difference.
We'll never be buying sour mix again.

Oh, and if you're not a fan of the mint julep (the official drink of the Kentucky Derby) consider this a win and serve it at your Derby party.

Start with your whiskey
(or bourbon- we are in Kentucky ya'll).
Bulleit Bourbon is one of our faves.
Mix up your sour mix on the stove top.
Bring 1.5 cups of water to boil.
Add in 1.5 cups of sugar; stir until it dissolves and remove it from the heat.
Add in one cup of fresh lemon juice and one cup of fresh lime juice.
(You can experiment with other fruit juices. We've added in fresh squeezed orange, and are going to be trying some blackberries once they're in season too!)
Throw some ice into the glasses
Bourbon next
Followed by the sour mix to taste.
Feel free to get fancy and garnish the drinks.
We haven't bothered yet.
